Most people arrive to Tulum by flying into the Cancun airport CUN and then driving down highway 307 to Tulum. The drive from the Cancun airport to Tulum is approximately 1.5 hours without stops. Alternatively you can also fly into Cozumel and take the ferry to Playa del Carmen, then travel down highway 307 to Tulum from Playa del Carmen. The ferry from Cozumel runs every 20 minutes and the ride to Playa del Carmen is about 45 minutes. Buses, shuttles, taxis and rental cars are readily available at the airport or in Play del Carmen.

You cannot fly directly into Tulum by commercial airline. Tulum does have a small airstrip where you can arrive by chartered flight or private plane.
Thee is no Uber service in Tulum. You may be able to get an Uber from the Cancun airport to Tulum but not back to the airport from Tulum. There are Uber drivers in Playa del Carmen and Cancun, but not in Tulum as of 2021. The taxi union in the area is very strong and is opposed to Uber in Tulum.
Taxis in Tulum are not expensive, but you do need to agree to the rate for the ride before you get into a taxi. Rates can vary from driver to driver and during peak hours, rates can be higher. As an example, you will pay more for a ride on the beach road-hotel zone on a busy night because you will be sitting in a lot of traffic. Time is money for the taxis.
Yes, taxis in Tulum are generally safe, especially during daylight hours. Most drivers are professional, but there are exceptions. After hours and late night we recommend you ride with a partner, especially if you are out very late or in a remote area. There have been instances late at night or early in the morning hours where people have had issues with drivers, extorting high fares or in some cases assault or leaving people. These are rare and the exception, especially if you use some common sense.
It is safe to walk in Tulum at night on the main avenue and well lit streets. Proceed with caution and travel with someone else if you are getting off the main avenue later into the evenings and wee hours of the morning. If you are going into areas and neighborhoods not as well lit and late at night be on guard.

The Playa del Carmen ADO bus to colectivo van to Tulum, is the least expensive option for transportation to Tulum (approximately $200-$300 pesos or $10-$15 USD). You can find plenty of both options when you are exiting the Cancun airport, or you can make arrangements in advance for a private driver and car. The cost for taxi or private car from the Cancun airport to Tulum is approximately $2000-$3000 pesos or $100-$150 USD.
The other options for transportation from Cancun to Tulum include; airport shuttle services, private vans, SUV’s and rental cars. Your choice should include factors including your group size and local transportation when you arrive to Tulum.
