As of October 2021. A taxi from Cancun airport to Tulum should be between $2000 and $2700 pesos.  The number of people in your party and certain drop-off locations may increase the exact rates.  The average taxi can accommodate 2-3 people. You will pay closer to the high end of rate estimates IF you are going down into the hotel zone, or more remote jungle and beach locations around Tulum-passengers, traffic, distance and road conditions are all "fare" factors.

Taxi fares in Tulum vary greatly by driver and pickup locations. Tulum taxi fares should always be negotiated and agreed to prior to getting in the taxi.  There have been several attempts over the years to have some standard cost for rides to different areas within Tulum, but they never hold.

The following information should help you with your negotiations.  Remember there are over 3000 taxis in Tulum and another one will come soon, if you are in town or on the beach road! Estimated Tulum taxi costs you can expect to pay as of 2021:

• Downtown Tulum to or from middle hotel zone (Azulik): $200-$300 Pesos
• Downtown Tulum to or from Ruins: $100-150 Pesos
• Downtown Tulum to or from Coba Ruins: $500-$600 Pesos
• Downtown Tulum to or from Playa del Carmen: $800-$1000 Pesos
• Tulum to or from Cancun Airport $1800-$2200 Pesos
• Rides in and around the downtown Tulum area should be no more than $50-$100 Pesos

Taxis in Tulum are generally safe and you should feel comfortable riding in a taxi alone during the daylight and early evening hours. The vast majority of drivers are safe and courteous and want your return business, the good ones will make sure to take care of you and give you their numbers for a future ride.

What about your safety? In most cases catching a ride in a random taxi around Tulum town or on the beach road is safe, especially during daylight hours with lots of other people around. There are exceptions however, specifically at night with reported incidents involving taxis and tourists.

For after hours and late night taxi rides in Tulum, especially in remote locations, it is better to travel with someone else, especially if you are "celebrating" and may have impaired judgement.  If you do travel alone at night, make sure you have a phone to share your live location and check-in when you arrive to your destination. As of 2021 there is currently no Uber service in Tulum, Mexico.  You CAN take an Uber from the Cancun airport to Tulum, but not from Tulum to the airport.  The taxi union/syndicate in the area is opposed to Uber in the Tulum area.

It is safe to walk in Tulum at night on the main avenue and well lit streets.  Proceed with caution and travel with someone else if you are getting off the main avenue later into the evenings and wee hours of the morning. If you are going into areas and neighborhoods not as well lit and late at night be on guard.

You can get around Tulum by walking or biking or by scooter or car, and of course by Tulum taxi service, depending on what you want to do and see.  Things are fairly spread out in Tulum so it is helpful to be mobile. Walking distance is a relative term as it is a 3 mile/5k walk to the beach from town!  The hotel zone is 9 KM long stretch of road and, biking is a good option but there is there is a lot to see and do in the area that make having a scooter or car a good option.
